Context
Pixel Addict and Amiga Addict are leading magazines dedicated to retro gaming, classic computing, and digital culture. Each issue explores the history and cultural legacy of home computing through features, interviews, reviews, and archival content. Working as a freelance designer across both publications, I contribute to the visual development of editorial spreads within the magazines' established design systems and production workflow.
Approach
Working closely with the editorial team, I receive article copy, imagery, and page specifications before developing layouts that balance readability with visual impact. The work sits in an interesting creative space, combining contemporary editorial design principles with subtle nods to retro computing aesthetics, whether through colour, texture, typographic references, or the handling of archival imagery. Each spread needs to feel distinctive and full of character while remaining cohesive within the wider publication and workable within production timelines.
Impact
The resulting layouts contribute to a visually engaging reading experience that reflects the energy and nostalgia of retro gaming culture while maintaining clarity and editorial consistency. Through ongoing collaboration with the production team, the work helps support the magazines’ reputation for polished, characterful design within the classic computing community.
