This project, part of an MA in Visual Communication, sought to explore the potential of pictograms as a tool for understanding modern life, culture, and society. It posed two central questions: Can pictograms effectively decode contemporary complexities? How can neologisms be visualised to aid comprehension and interpretation?

Drawing from theoretical and practical research, the project examined the evolving lexicon of 21st-century neologisms—new words and phrases that have rapidly entered everyday language. Through the design of a minimal, A6 softcover dictionary, the project combined pictograms with detailed definitions, offering readers an accessible and thought-provoking visual representation of emerging terms.

The monochromatic design emphasised simplicity and clarity, echoing the universal language of traditional pictograms. Each pictogram was designed to capture the essence of its corresponding neologism while leaving space for personal interpretation. This approach recognised the balance between universal comprehension and the subjective nature of visual symbols.

The resulting artefact successfully highlighted the potential of pictograms to visualise and interpret neologisms. By pairing visual and textual elements, the dictionary encouraged deeper engagement with the language of modern life, sparking curiosity about how new words shape cultural narratives.
